Chemical Composition of ASTM A213 T9 Tubes
Below are the composition limits per ASTM A213 / ASME SA213.
ASTM A213 Grade T9 is a 9% chromium, 1% molybdenum ferritic alloy steel. The high chromium content provides oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, while molybdenum strengthens the grain boundaries against creep deformation.
Mechanical Properties of ASTM A213 T9 Tubes
ASTM A213 T9 tubes have a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa (60 ksi), yield strength of 205 MPa (30 ksi), and elongation of 30%.
T9 tubes are normalised and tempered at a minimum temperature of 675 oC (1250 oF) to develop the required mechanical properties and microstructure.
| Property | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (min) | 415 (60) | MPa (ksi) |
| Yield Strength (min) | 205 (30) | MPa (ksi) |
| Elongation (min) | 30 | % |
| Hardness (max) | 89 HRB / 179 HBW | - |
Equivalent Standards for ASTM A213 T9 Tubes
The table given below lists the international equivalent designations of ASTM A213 T9 Seamless Tube.
ASTM A213 T9 is equivalent to ASME SA213 T9 for pressure vessel applications. International equivalents allow buyers to cross-reference their local standards for procurement and code compliance.
| Designation | Standard |
|---|---|
| UNS | K90941 |
| X12CrMo9-1 (1.7386) | EN 10216-2 |
| 12CrMo9-10 | DIN 17175 |
| STBA 26 | JIS G3462 |
ASTM A213 T9 Tube Industrial Applications
ASTM A213 T9 seamless tubes are crucial for power plant boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers, petrochemical reformers, refinery pipes, and high-temperature chemical processing apparatus.
Power Generation
T9 alloy steel tubes are used in high-heat boilers to create steam. The chromium prevents rust, ensuring power plants run reliably for years.
Petrochemical and Refinery
Handles hot crude oil and chemicals. It stays strong against corrosion when making gasoline, even at extreme temperatures.
Chemical Processing
These tubes enable reactors and cooling systems to handle heavy loads. Your facility needs reliability, and they resist bending or breaking during continual, high-heat chemical synthesis.
ASTM A213 T9 vs T11, T22, and T91 Tubes
Refer to the following comparison table to understand the performance hierarchy and technical trade-offs between ASTM A213 T9 and its neighbouring alloy steel grades.
| Feature | Grade T9 | Grade T11 | Grade T22 | Grade T91 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal Comp. | 9Cr-1Mo | 1.25Cr-0.5Mo | 2.25Cr-1Mo | 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb |
| Chromium (Cr) | 8.00% – 10.00% | 1.00% – 1.50% | 1.90% – 2.60% | 8.00% – 9.50% |
| Temp. Limit | Approx. 595°C | Approx. 540°C | Approx. 580°C | Approx. 620°C |
| Oxidation Resistance | High | Low | Moderate | Superior |
| Creep Strength | Standard | Low | Moderate | Very High |
| Best Application | High-sulfur units | Low-temp boilers | Main steam lines | Supercritical units |
T9 (9Cr-1Mo) is better at resisting oxidation than T11 and T22 when used at temperatures up to 595°C. This is a noticeable advantage when sulphidation is the main issue. T91 has better creep strength at even greater temperatures and pressures since it has vanadium and niobium in it.
