What is a Large Diameter Steel Pipe?
A large diameter steel pipe is a steel conduit with an outer diameter at the upper end of the standard pipe range, generally 16 inches (406.4 mm) and above. There's no single universal cut-off, and in pipeline and infrastructure procurement the term is most often applied to pipe of 24 inches (610 mm) and larger. The defining feature is the bore: a wider diameter carries far more fluid at a given velocity, which is why these pipes anchor long-distance transmission and bulk distribution systems.
Most big diameter steel pipe is welded rather than seamless. The reason is practical. Conventional seamless production becomes difficult and costly beyond roughly 24 inches, so above that size the economical route is to form pipe from rolled plate or coil and weld the seam. Carbon steel is the default material for buried water mains and oil and gas lines. Stainless steel, duplex, and nickel alloys are specified where the process fluid is corrosive or the service temperature is severe. A large diameter pipe is rarely an off-the-shelf item: diameter, wall thickness, length, end preparation, and coating are usually set against a project specification.
Large Diameter Pipe Manufacturing Processes
Large diameter pipe is produced by 5 main routes, each with its own diameter band, pressure rating, and economics: spiral submerged arc welding (SSAW), longitudinal submerged arc welding (LSAW), electric resistance welding (ERW), rolled-and-welded fabrication, and seamless. The construction chosen depends on size, operating pressure, and the medium being carried.
Spiral Submerged Arc Welded (SSAW) Pipe
Spiral welded pipe is formed by feeding steel strip into a forming head at an angle, so the seam runs in a helix along the pipe. The diameter range is the widest of any construction, typically 20 inches to 100 inches (508 mm to 2540 mm). Because a single strip width can produce several diameters, SSAW is the most flexible and cost-effective option for large bores. It suits low to medium pressure duties: water transmission mains, slurry lines, piling, and casing. The longer helical seam is its main limitation, which is why spiral pipe isn't the first choice for high-pressure hydrocarbon service.
Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (LSAW) Pipe
LSAW pipe is made from steel plate that is pressed into a cylinder and joined with a single straight seam by double-sided submerged arc welding. The usual range runs from 16 inches to 60 inches (406 mm to 1500 mm). Plate origin and the straight, fully fused seam give LSAW pipe strong geometric accuracy and good pressure resistance, so it competes directly with seamless and ERW pipe between 16 and 24 inches. Long-distance oil and gas transmission lines built to API 5L grades commonly use LSAW pipe for these reasons.
Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) Pipe
ERW pipe is formed continuously from coil and welded along a longitudinal seam using high-frequency electric current, without filler metal. Sizes run from half an inch up to about 24 inches (610 mm), and most large-diameter ERW sits at 20 inches (508 mm) and below; a few advanced high-frequency mills reach roughly 26 inches (660 mm). Wall thickness commonly reaches about 20 to 22 mm in modern high-frequency production. The advantages are dimensional consistency, high production speed, and lower cost, which make ERW pipe a strong choice for low to medium pressure water, structural, and general conveyance lines.
Rolled-and-Welded Fabricated Pipe
This is the route we use for custom large bores that fall outside standard mill sizes. Plate is rolled to the required diameter and welded, then the seam is examined by 100% radiography. Fabricated pipe is produced to the electric-fusion-welded standards (ASTM A671, A672, and A691 for carbon and alloy steel, ASTM A358 and A409 for stainless) and covers 24 inches and above to custom dimensions. We apply this method to deliver thick-wall and oversized sections, and it's how we supply 100% X-ray welded large diameter stainless steel pipe in sizes and wall thicknesses that no rolling mill stocks as standard.
Seamless Large Diameter Pipe
Seamless pipe has no weld at all, since it is pierced and elongated from a solid billet. It remains the benchmark for the most demanding high-pressure and high-temperature service. In commercial practice it is most commonly available up to about 24 to 26 inches, after which welded and fabricated constructions become the practical and economical choice. Seamless large diameter pipe is specified where weld integrity cannot be a variable, such as critical refinery and power plant lines.

Applications of Large Diameter Steel Pipe
Large diameter pipe serves 5 broad sectors: oil and gas transmission, water supply and sewage, structural and piling, power and petrochemical, and mining. The construction and grade are matched to the duty in each case.
Oil and Gas Transmission
Cross-country pipelines move crude, natural gas, and refined products over long distances, and they depend on large bores to maintain throughput at acceptable pressure drop. LSAW and seamless pipe to API 5L grades dominate here because of their pressure rating and weld integrity. Spiral pipe is generally not used on high-pressure trunk lines.
Water Supply and Sewage
Municipal water mains, sewage trunk lines, and irrigation transmission systems are the largest single market for big diameter pipe in India. IS 3589 governs this duty across 168.3 to 2540 mm OD, with ERW for moderate pressure and SAW for higher pressure. Coated spiral and longitudinal welded pipe is the usual specification for buried mains.
Structural and Piling
Large diameter pipe carries heavy axial and bending loads as bearing piles, drilled shaft casing, and combination walls. Its uniform bending strength in every direction makes it efficient for long unsupported lengths and deep foundations. Spiral and fabricated pipe suit this role because diameter and wall can be tuned to the structural demand.
Power and Petrochemical
Boiler feed lines, cooling water headers, and process piping in power and chemical plants call for stainless, duplex, or alloy steel pipe rated for temperature and corrosion. Fabricated and seamless constructions are preferred where the medium is hot, pressurised, or aggressive. Alloy grades such as A335 P11 and P22 are common on high-temperature steam service.
Mining and Slurry
Mine ventilation, dewatering, and slurry transport rely on large bores that tolerate abrasion and intermittent pressure. Spiral welded pipe with a wear-resistant lining or heavy wall is the practical choice for slurry duty. Diameter is sized to keep solids in suspension at the design flow rate.
Selection guidance: ERW pipe isn't appropriate for high-pressure hydrocarbon trunk lines; LSAW or seamless should be specified there. Spiral pipe is well suited to water and piling but isn't the right choice where the seam length raises a high-pressure integrity concern.
