Industrial Applications of SS 316 Large Diameter Pipes

SS 316 large-diameter pipes serve major sectors where large-bore piping must resist chloride corrosion at high temperatures.

Chemical Processing

Good resistance to organic acids and modest resistance to inorganic acids like phosphoric acid characterise SS 316. Sulphuric acid service depends on concentration and temperature and must be assessed individually.

Oil & Gas

Refineries and offshore platforms use these pipes for flowlines, heat exchanger shells, and process piping. Large bore EFW pipes serve subsea tie-in lines.

Water Treatment & Desalination

Desalination plants use SS 316 for seawater intake headers and brine discharge lines where chloride resistance up to 60°C is critical.

Marine & Offshore

SS 316 provides improved resistance to chloride environments compared to 304, but for continuous seawater exposure or elevated temperatures, higher alloyed grades are often preferred.

Pharmaceutical & Food Processing

Sanitary-grade SS 316 pipes with ID/OD polished finishes serve CIP piping and bulk transfer lines in pharmaceutical and food production.

Stainless Steel 316 vs 304 Large Diameter Pipes

SS 316 contains 2–3% molybdenum, which SS 304 doesn't contain. This gives 316 better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments: seawater, coastal atmospheres, and chemical process streams. SS 304 suits freshwater and mildly corrosive conditions at lower cost.

Feature Stainless Steel 316 Stainless Steel 304
Alloying Element 2–3% Molybdenum None
Corrosion Resistance Superior (Pitting/Crevice) Standard (Atmospheric)
Chloride Resistance Excellent (Seawater/Coastal) Poor (Stress corrosion risk)
Best Application Marine, Chemical, Pharma Food processing, Water lines
Relative Cost Higher (due to Molybdenum) More Economical

Stainless Steel 316 vs 316L Large Diameter Pipes

SS 316 permits a maximum of 0.08% carbon, while 316L is capped at 0.03%. Lower carbon in 316L reduces chromium carbide precipitation during welding (sensitisation), preventing intergranular corrosion. For welded large diameter pipe applications, it's the preferred choice.

Feature Stainless Steel 316 Stainless Steel 316L
Carbon Content Max 0.08% Max 0.03% (Low Carbon)
Welding Suitability Risk of sensitisation in heavy welds Excellent (No post-weld anneal)
Intergranular Corrosion Potential risk after welding Highly resistant
Mechanical Strength Slightly Higher Slightly Lower
Primary Advantage Better for high-temp strength Best for welded structures

Frequently Asked Questions:

What Sizes are Available for SS 316 Large Diameter Pipes? +
Sizes range from 6" NPS (168.3 mm OD) up to 100" NPS in EFW and up to 24" NPS in seamless. Schedules cover 5S through 160 and XXS.
What is the Price of SS 316 Large Diameter Pipe per Kg? +
Prices range from INR 250–450 per kg depending on size, schedule, and form. Request a quote for current rates.
What is the Difference Between Seamless and EFW SS 316 Large Diameter Pipes? +
Seamless pipes (ASTM A312) don't have a weld seam and offer higher pressure ratings. EFW pipes (ASTM A358) are rolled from plate and welded for large bore needs above 24" NPS at lower cost.
What ASTM Standards Cover SS 316 Large Diameter Pipes? +
ASTM A312 / ASME SA312 covers seamless and welded pipes. ASTM A358 / ASME SA-358 covers EFW large diameter pipes. ASTM A778 applies to welded unannealed products.
Can SS 316 Large Diameter Pipes be used in Seawater Applications? +
Yes. SS 316 is the preferred grade for marine and offshore piping due to its superior pitting resistance in chloride environments, which is a result of the 2–3% molybdenum content.
What is the Maximum Operating Temperature for SS 316 Large Diameter Pipes? +
SS 316 handles continuous service up to 870°C (1600°F) in oxidising conditions. Allowable stress drops above 540°C (1000°F).
What Wall Thickness Options are Available for SS 316 Large Diameter Pipes? +
Wall thickness covers Schedule 5S through Schedule 160 and XXS. EFW large diameter pipes reach up to 30 mm wall thickness.
How do SS 316 and SS 304 Large Diameter Pipes Compare? +
SS 316 includes 2–3% molybdenum that SS 304 lacks, giving it better chloride corrosion resistance for marine, chemical, and desalination applications.
