Inconel 600 Plate Industrial Applications
Inconel 600 plate is used in 4 major industrial sectors. Each application takes advantage of different properties within the alloy's performance range.
Chemical and Petrochemical Processing
Alloy 600 plate is used in chlorination equipment, titanium dioxide production vessels, and acetic acid reactors.
Thermal Processing and Heat Treatment
Inconel 600 plate serves as material for muffles, retorts, roller hearths, and furnace fixtures.
Power Generation and Nuclear
Nuclear reactor components, steam generator tubing support plates, and primary-water-side hardware use Inconel 600 plate.
Aerospace and Defence
Inconel 600 plate per AMS 5540 is specified for exhaust liners, combustion chamber components, and turbine shrouds.
Inconel 600 Plate vs Inconel 625 Plate
Inconel 600 plate offers cost-effective oxidation resistance up to 2000°F. Inconel 625 plate delivers greater strength and significantly better pitting resistance from its molybdenum content. Use Inconel 600 for primarily oxidising conditions; choose Inconel 625 for chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, or heavier mechanical loads.
| Property | Inconel 600 Plate | Inconel 625 Plate |
|---|---|---|
| UNS | N06600 | N06625 |
| Nickel Content | 72.0% min | 58.0% min |
| Chromium | 14.0 to 17.0% | 20.0 to 23.0% |
| Molybdenum | None | 8.0 to 10.0% |
| Tensile Strength | 80 ksi (550 MPa) | 120 ksi (827 MPa) |
| Yield Strength | 35 ksi (240 MPa) | 60 ksi (414 MPa) |
| Pitting Resistance | Moderate | High (Mo content) |
| Max Service Temp | 2000°F (1093°C) | 1800°F (982°C) |
| Relative Cost | Lower | Higher |
Inconel 600 Plate Corrosion Resistance
Inconel 600 plate resists a wide range of corrosive media. The high nickel content (72.0% min) makes it virtually immune to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking, while the chromium content (14.0 to 17.0%) provides resistance to sulfur compounds and oxidising environments.
High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance
Alloy 600 plate forms a stable chromium oxide layer that resists scaling up to 2000°F (1093°C). In furnace atmospheres containing sulfur, this plate outperforms stainless steels that lose their protective oxide above 1200°F (649°C). Carburising and nitriding atmospheres do not significantly attack Inconel 600 plate.
Resistance to Caustic and Alkaline Environments
Inconel 600 plate handles caustic soda (NaOH) solutions at concentrations up to 50% and temperatures up to boiling. The nickel base resists stress corrosion cracking in alkaline media where austenitic stainless steels would fail.
