What are Buttweld Fittings?

Buttweld fittings are wrought pipe fittings that are welded directly to the end of a pipe to change its direction, branch it, reduce its size, or close it off. The fitting and the pipe are bevelled, aligned end to end, and joined with a full-penetration weld. This gives a strong, leak-tight joint with smooth internal flow, which is why buttweld connections are preferred on larger-bore and higher-pressure lines. The fittings are made from pipe, plate, or forgings, then shaped by hot or cold forming and heat treated. Dimensions follow ASME B16.9, while the metal itself is supplied to an ASTM or MSS material specification.

Industrial Applications of Buttweld Fittings

Buttweld fittings are used wherever piping must carry fluids at high pressure or high temperature through a permanent, leak-tight joint. The grade is matched to the medium and the duty, so the same fitting type is supplied in carbon steel for one line and in stainless or alloy steel for another. We supply buttweld fittings into the following sectors:

Oil and Gas

Transmission pipelines, refineries, and offshore platforms, where carbon steel (A234 WPB) and high-yield (MSS SP-75 WPHY) grades carry hydrocarbons under pressure.

Petrochemical and Chemical Processing

Reactor and transfer lines, where stainless (A403) and duplex (A815) fittings resist corrosive and chloride-bearing media.

Power Generation

Boiler feed, steam, and superheater lines in thermal and nuclear plants, where chrome-moly alloy grades (A234 WP11, WP22, WP91) handle high-temperature service.

Water and Wastewater

Treatment plants and distribution headers, where carbon and stainless fittings join large-bore mains.

Fertiliser and Process Plants

Ammonia, urea, and acid lines that call for corrosion-resistant stainless and nickel-alloy fittings.

Shipbuilding and Marine

Deck and engine-room piping that must withstand a saline environment.

Testing, Inspection and Documentation

Every batch is tested and supplied with full traceability. Standard documentation includes:

  • Radiographic (X-ray) examination of welded fittings and hydrostatic testing where required
  • Positive Material Identification (PMI) and chemical spectro analysis
  • Tensile, hardness, and intergranular corrosion (IGC) testing where specified
  • Mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2
  • NACE MR0175 compliance for sour service, and third-party or NABL-approved laboratory reports on request

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are buttweld fittings?+
Buttweld fittings are wrought fittings welded end to end onto a pipe to change direction, branch, reduce, or cap a line. They give a strong, leak-tight joint with smooth internal flow.
What is the size range of buttweld fittings?+
Standard buttweld fittings are made from NPS 1/2 inch to 48 inches under ASME B16.9. Larger welded and fabricated fittings are produced to order.
Which standards apply to buttweld fittings?+
Dimensions follow ASME B16.9 (with B16.28 for short-radius elbows). The material follows an ASTM or MSS specification: A234 for carbon and alloy steel, A403 for stainless, A420 for low temperature, A815 for duplex, and MSS SP-75 for high-yield line-pipe grades.
What is the difference between buttweld and socket weld fittings?+
Buttweld fittings are welded end to end to ASME B16.9 and suit larger bores and higher pressures. Socket weld fittings are forged to ASME B16.11 and used on smaller pipe, where the pipe slots into a socket and is fillet welded.
Are buttweld fittings seamless or welded?+
They are made both ways. We supply seamless, welded, and fabricated buttweld fittings; welded fittings can be supplied with 100% radiographic examination when specified by the project requirements.
