Stainless Steel 304L plates are low-carbon austenitic flat-rolled products manufactured to ASTM A240 and ASME SA-240. The grade carries UNS S30403 designation and belongs to the 18/8 chromium-nickel family, with a carbon content capped at 0.030%. This restricted carbon level is what separates 304L from standard 304: it prevents chromium carbide precipitation along grain boundaries during welding. As-welded intergranular corrosion resistance improves. SS 304L plates have 485 MPa (70 ksi) minimum tensile strength, 170 MPa yield strength, and 35% elongation in 2 inches.
