The alloy contains 19.0–23.0% chromium, 23.0–28.0% nickel, 4.0–5.0% molybdenum, and 1.0–2.0% copper, with carbon limited to 0.020% max. This composition gives 904L heat exchanger tubes strong resistance to reducing acids, including sulphuric and phosphoric acid, along with solid chloride pitting performance. Minimum tensile strength is 490 MPa (71 ksi), yield strength is 215 MPa (31 ksi), and elongation is 35%.
