Monel 400 Plate Price

Monel 400 plate prices start from approximately Rs 1,200/kg in India. In the US market, pricing is $25 to $55 perkg, significantly depending on thickness, dimensions, and quantity. A 3/8 inch x 12-inch x 24-inch plate retails at approximately $1,961.

Prices fluctuate with nickel and copper commodity markets. AMS 4544 specification plates cost more than standard commercial ASTM B127 plates. Contact Sachiya Steel International for current pricing on Monel 400 plates in your required size and finish.

Chemical Composition of Monel 400 Plates

Monel 400 plates contain a minimum of 63% nickel and 28 to 34% copper, with controlled additions of iron, manganese, carbon, silicon, and sulphur per ASTM B127. The high nickel content provides the alloy's corrosion resistance, while copper improves performance in reducing acid environments. Iron and manganese are present in controlled amounts to support solid-solution strengthening.

Mechanical Properties of Monel 400 Plates

The table below lists the mechanical properties of Monel 400 plates in the annealed condition, per ASTM B127 / ASME SB-127. Monel 400 plate hardness ranges from 110 to 149 Brinell (Rockwell B60 to B79) depending on the temper condition. The alloy retains good ductility at cryogenic temperatures, which makes it suitable for LNG and low-temperature processing equipment.

Monel 400 Plates Industrial Applications

Monel 400 plates find use across 4 major industrial sectors. Because it resists seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid, and alkalis, it can be used in tough, corrosive environments.

Marine Engineering

Monel 400 plates are a standard material for propeller shafts, seawater piping systems, and marine fasteners.

Chemical & Hydrocarbon Processing

Alloy 400 plates perform well in hydrofluoric acid alkylation units and sulphuric acid processing equipment.

Heat Exchangers & Boiler Components

It is used for heat transfer applications, feedwater heaters, condenser tubes, and boiler components.

Oil & Gas Equipment

Monel 400 plates serve in wellhead components, valve bodies, and downhole tools exposed to sour gas environments.

Monel 400 Plates vs Stainless Steel 316 Plates

Monel 400 plates outperform stainless steel 316 plates in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and de-aerated sulphuric acid environments. The table below compares key properties. While Monel 400 costs 3 to 5 times more per kg than stainless steel 316, its superior corrosion resistance in marine and acid environments delivers longer service life and lower total cost of ownership for applications where 316 would fail prematurely.

Property Monel 400 Stainless Steel 316
Nickel Content 63% min 10 - 14%
Seawater Resistance Excellent Moderate (pitting risk)
HF Acid Resistance Excellent Poor
Tensile Strength 70,000 psi (480 MPa) 75,000 psi (515 MPa)
Approximate Cost 3 to 5x higher Baseline
Max Service Temperature 1,000°F (538°C) 1,500°F (816°C)

Can Monel 400 Plates be welded? +
Monel 400 plates have good weldability using GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) processes with ERNiCu-7 filler metal. Preheat is generally not required. The alloy's P-number is 42 per ASME Section IX.
Is Monel 400 Plate magnetic? +
Monel 400 is slightly magnetic at room temperature. Its Curie temperature is 50 °F (10 °C), meaning the alloy becomes weakly ferromagnetic below this temperature. Buyers in instrumentation or magnetically sensitive applications should account for this property.
What is the difference between Monel 400 Plate and Monel 400 Sheet? +
The distinction is thickness: Monel 400 sheet is typically 0.018 inch to 0.140 inch thick, while Monel 400 plate starts at 3/16 inch (0.1875 inch) and goes up to 4 inches. Both product forms are covered by ASTM B127 / ASME SB-127.
Is Alloy 400 the same as Monel 400? +
Alloy 400 is the generic industry name for Monel 400. The material specifications (ASTM B127), chemical composition, and mechanical properties are identical regardless of the trade name used.
What is the maximum service temperature for Monel 400 Plates? +
Monel 400 plates can operate at temperatures from subzero to 1,000 oF (538 oC). The alloy maintains good mechanical properties across this full range. It is particularly valued for cryogenic applications in LNG and low-temperature processing.
How to weld Monel 400 Plates? +
Monel 400 plates are weldable via TIG and MIG using ERNiCu-7 filler; it does not require preheat, and the interpass temperature is below 150°C; P-No. 42, with post-weld annealing restoring corrosion resistance.
