ASTM A335 P11 Pipe Industrial Applications

ASTM A335 P11 pipe is used across 3 primary industrial sectors where piping systems operate at elevated temperatures and pressures. The 1.25Cr-0.5Mo composition provides the oxidation resistance and creep strength needed for continuous service at temperatures up to approximately 590°C (1094°F).

Power Generation & Boiler Systems

ASTM A335 P11 pipe is a standard material for steam piping, boiler superheater lines, and reheater circuits in coal-fired and gas-fired power plants.

Oil & Gas Refineries

Refinery process piping carrying hydrocarbon streams at elevated temperatures relies on P11 alloy steel pipe. Specific applications include crude distillation unit transfer lines, catalytic cracker feed piping, and heat exchanger shell piping.

Petrochemical & Chemical Processing

P11 pipe is used where process gases or liquids move through reactor circuits and furnace outlet piping at high temperatures. Ethylene cracker transfer lines and ammonia plant synthesis loop piping are common examples.

ASTM A335 P11 vs P22 Pipe: Key Differences

The table below provides the key differences between ASTM A335 P11 pipe and ASTM A335 P22 pipe.

Feature ASTM A335 P9 ASTM A335 P91
Nominal Composition 9Cr-1Mo 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb
Alloying Additions None Vanadium (V) & Niobium (Nb)
Tensile Strength (min) 415 MPa (60 ksi) 585 MPa (85 ksi)
Yield Strength (min) 205 MPa (30 ksi) 415 MPa (60 ksi)
Temp. Ceiling (Approx.) 600°C 620°C
Creep Resistance Standard Superior (High Rupture Life)
Welding Complexity Moderate High (Strict PWHT/Preheat)
Cost Profile Economical Premium

P11 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo) is ideal for service up to approximately 590°C. P22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) handles higher temperatures up to approximately 600°C with greater creep resistance because of its higher chromium and molybdenum content. P11 is the more cost-effective option for moderately high-temperature applications.
Both grades share identical minimum tensile and yield strength values. P22's higher alloy content gives it better long-term creep performance above 560°C. For service below 540°C, P11 provides equivalent performance at lower cost.

Heat Treatment of ASTM A335 P11 Pipe

ASTM A335 P11 pipe should be heat treated by full annealing, isothermal annealing, or normalising and tempering at a minimum temperature of 650°C (1200°F).

Full annealing heats the pipe above the upper critical temperature, followed by furnace cooling to produce a soft ferritic-pearlitic microstructure. Normalising and tempering involve air cooling from the austenitising range. Then it is reheated to a minimum of 650°C. The tempering step relieves residual stresses and improves toughness.

Preheating at 200 to 300°C is recommended for field welding of A335 P11 alloy steel pipe. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 650 to 720°C is required to restore heat-affected zone properties and relieve welding stresses.

What sizes are available for ASTM A335 P11 Pipe?+
ASTM A335 P11 pipe comes in sizes 1/2" NB to 24" NB (21.3 mm to 610 mm OD) in schedules 20 through XXS. Lengths include single random (5 to 7 m), double random (9 to 13.5 m), and cut-to-length. Bevelled, plain, and threaded end types are stocked.
What is the tensile strength of ASTM A335 P11 Pipe?+
ASTM A335 P11 pipe has a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa (60 ksi) per ASTM A335 / ASME SA-335. These values apply to pipe supplied in the annealed or normalised and tempered condition.
What is the maximum service temperature for ASTM A335 P11 Pipe?+
ASTM A335 P11 pipe is suitable for continuous service at wall temperatures up to approximately 590°C (1094°F).
What is the difference between ASTM A335 P11 and P22 Pipe?+
The primary difference is alloy content. ASTM A335 P11 contains 1.00 to 1.50% chromium and 0.44 to 0.65% molybdenum (1.25Cr-0.5Mo). ASTM A335 P22 comprises 1.90 to 2.60% chromium and 0.87 to 1.13% molybdenum (2.25Cr-1Mo). P22 handles slightly higher temperatures (up to ~600°C vs ~590°C for P11) and offers better creep resistance above 560°C. P11 is more cost-effective for services below 540°C.
Can ASTM A335 P11 Pipe be welded?+
Yes. ASTM A335 P11 pipe can be welded using standard fusion welding techniques. Preheating at 200 to 300°C is recommended before welding. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 650 to 720°C is required for most ASME code applications to restore the heat-affected zone properties and relieve residual stresses.
Is ASTM A335 P11 a seamless pipe?+
Yes. ASTM A335 specifically covers seamless ferritic alloy steel pipe. P11 pipe is manufactured by hot rolling or cold drawing from a solid billet, producing a homogeneous structure without a weld seam.
