Duplex stainless steel pipe is a ferritic-austenitic stainless steel conduit with a two-phase microstructure. This structure gives it a yield strength about twice that of standard austenitic grades, which makes it useful where higher pressure ratings or thinner wall sections are needed. It is manufactured to ASTM A790 / ASME SA-790.

Available grades include 2205 (UNS S32205 / S31803). Its chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content together give it strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-heavy environments. Compared to austenitic grades, thermal conductivity is improved. Additionally, the lower nickel content, when compared to grades like 316L, helps to stabilise material costs. Grade 2205 has a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of approximately 35, which makes it suitable for oil and gas, chemical processing, and desalination applications.
