Applicable Standards and Grades of Monel Pipes

Key international standards covering Monel pipe manufacturing and quality requirements.

Standard / Code Description
ASTM B165 / ASME SB-165 Seamless nickel-copper alloy pipe (UNS N04400)
ASTM B725 / ASME SB-725 Welded nickel-copper alloy pipe
AMS 4574 Aerospace material specification

Monel Pipe Grades

Monel pipe is available in two grades: Monel 400 (UNS N04400) and Monel K-500 (UNS N05500).

Monel 400 Pipe

Monel 400 contains approximately 63% nickel and 28-34% copper, strengthened through cold working only. Resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and caustic solutions is excellent from subzero to 538 0C.

Monel K-500 Pipe

Monel K-500 is an age-hardenable variant with aluminium and titanium additions. It achieves higher tensile strength and hardness than Monel 400 after precipitation hardening, while retaining comparable corrosion resistance.

Types of Monel Pipe

Monel pipe is produced in two primary types: seamless pipe (ASTM B165) and welded pipe (ASTM B725).

Monel Seamless Pipe

Monel Welded Pipe

Monel Welded Pipe

Monel Pipe Industrial Applications

Monel pipe finds use where reducing acids, seawater, and high-velocity brine demand corrosion resistance at temperatures up to 538 °C.

Marine Engineering

Monel pipe serves in seawater piping systems, shipboard fire mains, and desalination condenser tubing. Chloride-induced corrosion resistance makes it a standard choice.

Chemical Processing

Chemical plants specify Monel 400 pipe for hydrofluoric acid, caustic soda, and seawater handling. Heat exchangers in HF alkylation units are a common installation.

Oil & Gas

Sour gas facilities and offshore platforms use Monel pipe where hydrogen sulfide and chloride-bearing fluids are present.

Monel Pipe vs Inconel Pipe

The selection between Monel and Inconel pipe depends on the corrosive media and operating temperature.

Parameter Monel Pipe (Ni-Cu) Inconel Pipe (Ni-Cr)
Primary Alloying Element Copper (28 to 34%) Chromium (14 to 25%)
Best Suited For Reducing acids, seawater, HF acid Oxidising environments, high temperature
Max Service Temperature 538 degrees C (1,000 degrees F) Above 650 degrees C (1,200 degrees F)
Base Alloy System Nickel–Copper Nickel–Chromium
Key Alloying Role Copper improves resistance in reducing media Chromium provides oxidation and scaling resistance
Corrosion Environment Focus Reducing acids, seawater Oxidising environments, high-temperature exposure
Fabrication Relatively easier to machine Work hardening makes machining more demanding
Weldability Good with standard procedures Good, but requires tighter process control
Cost Range Lower to moderate Moderate to high
Typical Applications Marine, chemical processing Heat exchangers, aerospace, high-temp systems

Monel pipe is the better option for reducing acid and marine environments, while Inconel suits oxidising conditions at higher temperatures.
