Temper Conditions for Stainless Steel 304 Shim Sheets

  • Soft (Annealed): Soft temper provides maximum ductility at 515 MPa tensile strength and 35% elongation. It is non-magnetic and ideal for bending or forming.
  • Quarter Hard: Quarter Hard shim goes through light cold reduction, raising yield strength above the annealed baseline.
  • Half Hard: Half Hard 304 shim stock balances increased tensile strength with moderate ductility. Slight magnetic response may occur.
  • Full Hard: Full Hard offers the highest cold-worked strength with minimal ductility for load-bearing applications.
  • Spring Hard (Spring Temper): Spring Temper offers high elastic recovery for spring clips, retaining washers, and feeler gauge stock.

Surface Finishes Available

Stainless steel 304 shim sheets are available in the following finishes.

  • 2B (cold-rolled, smooth) SS 304 shim sheet
  • BA (Bright Annealed) AISI 304 shim sheet
  • 2D (cold-rolled, matte, non-reflective finish)
  • No.4 (brushed finish with fine polishing lines)
  • No.8 (mirror finish with high reflectivity)
  • Hairline (directional satin finish with continuous fine lines)

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 304 Shim Sheets

Stainless Steel 304 Shim Sheets serve 5 major sectors for spacing, clearance adjustment, and gap filling.

Aerospace & Defence

Aerospace manufacturers use 304 precision shim stock for airframe clearance adjustment and engine parts spacing.

Food & Beverage Processing

Grade 304's corrosion resistance makes it suitable for shimming conveyor systems and packaging line equipment.

Medical Devices & Equipment

The alloy is used in non-implant medical equipment, instrumentation, and diagnostic equipment frames.

Automotive & General Machinery

Production lines use 304 shim sheets for die alignment, fixture spacing, and tolerance correction.

Chemical & Petrochemical Processing

SS 304 shim sheets resist most organic acids and serve as gasket spacers and valve shims in processing plants.

Stainless Steel 304 vs Stainless Steel 316 Shim Sheets

The table below provides a comparison between SS 304 and SS 316 shim sheets. This will help you select the right grade depending on cost, corrosion resistance, and service environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the standard sizes for SS 304 Shim Sheets?+
SS 304 shim sheets come in thicknesses from 0.025 mm to 5.0 mm, widths from 3.2 mm to 1500 mm, and lengths from 300 mm to 6000 mm. Custom sizes available on request.
What temper conditions are available for 304 Stainless Steel Shim Sheets?+
304 SS shim sheets are supplied in Soft (Annealed), Quarter Hard, Half Hard, Full Hard, and Spring Hard conditions.
Is 304 Stainless Steel Shim Stock magnetic?+
In the annealed condition, 304 shim stock is generally non-magnetic. Cold working to Half Hard or Full Hard can induce slight magnetism from strain-induced martensite.
What is the difference between 304 and 316 Stainless Steel Shim Sheets?+
304 offers good corrosion resistance at a lower cost. 316 contains 2–3% molybdenum for superior chloride resistance. Choose 304 for standard use; 316 for marine or chemical environments.
What ASTM Specification covers SS 304 Shim Sheets?+
ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 covers the annealed condition. ASTM A666 applies to cold-worked temper conditions.
Can SS 304 Shim Sheets be custom cut to specific dimensions?+
