Grade 304 (General Purpose)

The 18-8 austenitic composition (18% Cr, 8-11% Ni) has good corrosion resistance for general industrial conditions. It is usually supplied in full-hard, cold-rolled form to give maximum spring-back for precise alignment.

Grade 316 (Corrosion Resistant)

The addition of 2.00-3.00% molybdenum separates this grade from 304. Grade 316 shim sheets are selected for marine equipment, chemical processing plants, pharmaceutical facilities, and food processing lines where chloride or acid exposure is present.

Which grade of SS shim sheet should I choose, 304 or 316?+
Grade 304 is suitable for everyday uses where a medium level of corrosion resistance is adequate. Grade 316 is the better choice when the shim will face chlorides, marine conditions, or chemical processing environments. The molybdenum content in 316 (2.00-3.00%) provides meaningfully better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.
What is the difference between full hard and annealed Stainless Steel Shim sheets?+
Full-hard shim sheets are cold rolled to maximum hardness. It springs back well and is very strong, so it works for precise shimming where the shim must not bend or deform. Annealed shim sheets are softer and easier to shape, making them better when the shim needs to be bent or formed during installation.
